You will be invited for an assessment appointment with one of our therapists. The appointment will last approximately one hour and will be either in person, via telephone or video call. The purpose of the assessment is to understand the difficulties and look at what would be helpful. The assessment is child focused and therefore children and young people have the option to be seen on their own for at least part of the assessment. The assessment process may take more than one appointment and will likely require us to speak with other professionals involved with you and your family with your consent.

Sensitive information may be discussed, therefore if the appointment is held via telephone or video call we would recommend you are in a private space.

Below are some of the things we may ask about:

  • Symptoms and difficulties
  • Routines and daily life such as sleep, appetite, and activity levels
  • Hobbies and interests
  • Safety
  • How things are at nursery/school/college
  • Family life and friendships/relationships
  • Early history (development and milestones)
  • What support is felt to be needed

Following the assessment, we will discuss treatment options and agree a plan.

It is normal to feel anxious or worried about attending the assessment appointment. Our therapists will do everything they can to put you at ease. If you require any special arrangements, please contact us so we can discuss your needs.

If you have any questions about the assessment process you call 0191 283 2937 and ask to speak to a duty worker.
