Gateshead Talking Therapies is proud to mark the 'International Day of Action for Women’s Health', on the 28th May.
The day draws attention to the need for health care equality and rights for all Women and Girls across the globe.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that while women generally outlive men, they spend significantly more of their lives in poor health. Historic gender bias in medical research, service design, and data collection has led to deep inequities, delayed diagnoses, and inadequate care for women globally.
Gender norms, power relations and structural inequalities influence women’s exposure to health risks, access to care, quality of services and responsiveness of health systems. As a result, women may experience diseases differently from men, present with different symptoms and have distinct care needs at different stages of life. Noncommunicable diseases, including cardiovascular conditions, and mental health conditions represent a growing burden, often under diagnosed or inadequately treated. Addressing women’s health therefore requires a comprehensive, rights-based and life‑course approach that reflects women’s bodies, diverse realities and experiences.
The date has been commemorated by women ’s health advocates and their communities since 1987, when during the International Women’s Health Meeting in Costa Rica, Latin American and Caribbean Women’s Health Network (LACWHN) proposed to celebrate May 28 annually as the International Day of Action for Women’s Health.
