Refugee Week (15–21 June)  brings together people from different backgrounds to connect beyond labels, and foster a deeper understanding of why people are displaced, and the challenges they face when seeking safety.

Refugee Week is a helpful opportunity for us to pause and reflect on the experiences, strengths, and resilience of people seeking sanctuary, and to consider some of the unique challenges they may face in relation to their mental health and well-being

At Gateshead Talking Therapies we are here to support people from all backgrounds, including refugees and people seeking asylum, with their mental health. Including supporting people who may experienced trauma, loss, and significant uncertainty.

We understand that refugees and people seeking asylum may face barriers to accessing mental health support, such as unfamiliarity with services, language and cultural differences.

At Gateshead Talking Therapies, we offer compassionate, traumainformed, and culturally sensitive care. Taking time to listen, staying open and curious, and recognising both the challenges and strengths in the people we work with can make a real difference. Small things — like using clear language, offering interpreters, and being flexible where possible — can help people feel more understood and supported.

Several local organisations also provide culturally diverse emotional and practical support for asylum seekers and refugees:-

  • The Solace Project: Run in partnership with Tyneside and Northumberland Mind, this project offers specialized 1:1 mental health guidance and drop-in support groups for refugees and asylum seekers in the Tyneside area.
  • The Comfrey Project: Located at the Windmill Hills Centre (NE8 1QB), they provide social and therapeutic horticulture, wellbeing activities, and language cafes to help new arrivals integrate and heal.
  • Peace of Mind: A Gateshead-based, refugee-led community organization offering practical and emotional support, as well as educational opportunities.
