Group Interventions

Evidence based research shows that group interventions have a significant impact on young people’s mental health.  We have developed and extended our group offer so that we can support as many young people and their families in Gateshead through group support.
If we feel that a group is the best treatment following assessment, we will talk you through the programme and ask you to complete our group treatment agreement.

Our groups run between 7 to 15 weeks in which time we build strong relationships with our young people and their families. We see excellent recovery rates at the end of a group intervention.

Decider Skills
Decider skills is a group programme which teaches young people aged 11 and over skills to recognise their own thoughts, feelings and behaviours, allowing them to monitor and manage their own emotions and mental health. The skills were designed to enable young people to make effective changes to help manage distress, regulate emotion, increase mindfulness, promote effective communication and help to live a less impulsive life.



Fun Friends
Fun Friends is a group intervention for children aged 6-7 to provide them with strategies to build resilience and manage anxieties through understanding their feelings, identifying helpful thoughts, problem solving, taking small steps to achieve their goals and rewarding themselves. Parent and carer sessions are part of this intervention too.

Friends for Life
Friends for Life is a group intervention for children aged 8-11 to provide them with strategies to build resilience and manage anxieties through understanding their feelings, identifying helpful thoughts, problem solving, taking small steps to achieve their goals and rewarding themselves. Parent and carer sessions are part of this intervention too.

My Friends Youth
My Friends Youth is a group intervention for young people aged 12-15 to provide them with strategies to build resilience and manage anxieties through understanding their feelings, identifying helpful thoughts, problem solving, taking small steps to achieve their goals, conflict resolution and rewarding themselves. Parent and carer sessions are part of this intervention too.

Guided Self Help Parenting
Guided Self-Help Parenting is a therapeutic group programme for parent and carers. It empowers parents of children 5-11 years to address challenging behaviour and provides positive strategies to reduce challenging behaviour and build positive relationships with their children. Offering special time, praise and rewards, clear boundaries and limits can help children to regulate their emotions.

Parent Led Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
Parent Led CBT is an evidence-based group programme for parent and carers with children aged 5 to 12 where the main presenting problem is anxiety. Parent and carers are provided with strategies which can be used at home to help their children to cope with and overcome anxiety while also building the parent’s ability and confidence in supporting their child.
