Loneliness can be described as how we feel (upset and distress) when we notice a gap between what we would like our social connections are and what the social connections are with other people. Being alone is not the same as feeling lonely.
Why are children and young people experiencing loneliness?
Mental Health Foundation: Sometimes children and young people find it difficult to mix with friends in school and in the community.
Having opportunities to see other people and have good role models has a known positive impact.
Friendships are important for young people as they grow up and can be a great support.
A survey in 2018: 40% of respondents aged 16-24 reported feeling lonely often or very often, while only 29% of people aged 65-74 and 27% of people aged over 75 said the same (Loneliness in young people: research briefing | Mental Health Foundation).
There are close links between loneliness and future mental health difficulties. Social isolation and loneliness increase the risk of depression, so it is important to consider the 5 ways to wellbeing.
5 a day for mental wellbeing (GIVE, KEEP LEARNING, CONNECT, BE ACTIVE, & TAKE NOTICE) helps us to consider the 5 things we can do each day to help us keep well.
5 steps to mental wellbeing - NHS
5 a day:
GIVE- share your time, a smile or thanks. Offer to do something together with a friend, your family or someone at school or college. What can you do today to support someone else?
BE ACTIVE- the more physically active the more we can feel better. When we do activities with others perhaps in a group or team this can help us to feel connected with others. What can you do with someone to get the feel-good factor?
TAKE NOTICE-Take notice of how people are feeling around you. Notice if someone is alone. Take notice of what social activities are in your local area. What social activities do you enjoy? Could you join in an activity with someone you know and trust?
KEEP LEARNING- Sometimes you can learn a new skill or sport from other people. Doing things together can help make new friends. Think about what you would like to learn about?
CONNECT- connect with others. How will you get in touch today? With permission and help from a trusted adult could you see someone you know, maybe go out with a friend or contact them to say hello, call or text them or leave a voice message.
