Peer Mentoring
As part of our whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing, the Healthy Minds Team can provide peer mentoring training for a group of children in a school. Peer mentoring has been evidenced to have a positive impact on the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. The selected students will be mentors for the rest of the school and will support at break and lunchtime for students who may feel worried. ![]()
There are eight sessions which we typically deliver across four weeks. Within the sessions, we will focus on developing the following skills: understanding the role of peer mentoring, friendship, listening, communication, anti-bullying, self-esteem and confidentiality. The final session will include a celebration event, in which parents may be invited to celebrate their child's new role. Students can also deliver a short presentation stating what they have learned in sessions before the presenting of certificates.
Ways you can support at home:
Parents can encourage children to discuss what they have learnt within sessions and how this links with their role as a peer mentor, for example, the importance of listening as a peer mentor.
