Understanding Myself

As part of our whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing, the Healthy Minds Team offer the ‘Understanding Myself’ programme. ‘Understanding Myself’ is aimed at those displaying traits or have a diagnosis of autism. The programme aims to increase self-awareness, help others understand the needs of the young person and their unique experiences of the world, improve self-confidence, and raise self-esteem. This is a six-session support programme which looks at:

  1. Getting to know myself
  2. Understanding my senses
  3. Understanding anxiety
  4. Zones of regulation
  5. Self Esteem
  6. Creating a Communication Passport

Ways you can support at home: Parents/carers can seek further support and advice from the Toby Henderson Trust for those children with a diagnosis of autism or displaying traits. Additionally, parents/carers can encourage discussion around sensory needs, recognising emotions or using the Zones of Regulation if this is difficult for your child.

Please note: We always aim to be neuro-affirming during our sessions. This programme does not intend to replace or stop any behaviours/traits associated with autism. Instead, this programme is for children and young people to develop a better sense of their needs while focusing on their individual strengths and how their likes and dislikes can support with self-regulation. We are in the process of seeking feedback from autistic children and young people in order to improve this programme.
