1st-7th of August is World Breastfeeding Awareness Week (WBW). The campaign, starting in 1992 aims to inform, anchor, engage and galvanise action on breastfeeding and related issues.
WBW highlights and promotes the well-being of babies and mothers. Drawing attention to the barriers in our healthcare systems and societies affecting the nutrition of babies. The campaign calls for mothers to be supported to breastfeed, for women that can, so they can give their babies the best possible start.
Giving an infant breast-milk for the first 6 months of life (no other food or water) – has the single largest potential impact on child mortality of any preventive intervention (from the World Health Organisation 2025). Roughly 2 out of 5 babies (about 40% or nearly 78 million globally) are not breastfeed within the first hour of life, mostly in low- and middle-income regions (from the World Health Organisation 2025).
Gateshead Talking Therapies is here to offer psychological support to help expectant and new mums manage their mental health and the emotional shifts of parenthood, through one-to-one therapy and our Mums Talk group.
